Repeated Cleansing and Barrier Recovery in Pet Skin

Frequent cleansing may remove surface lipids, including naturally produced oils that support moisture balance and surface protection.

Repeated washing has been shown to reduce key components of the stratum corneum, including cholesterol and free fatty acids required for structural cohesion.

Unlike humans, pet skin has fewer epidermal layers and lower baseline lipid reserves. This reduces tolerance to repeated lipid loss.

Barrier lipid reorganisation can take 24–72 hours depending on condition and exposure. If cleansing occurs within this window, restoration is incomplete.

The skin renewal paradox

  • Human skin renews in approximately 28 days.
  • Canine and feline skin renews faster, at approximately 20–21 days.
  • This reduces the time available for complete barrier restoration between cycles.

Incomplete restoration may contribute to cumulative effects.
